After a three year hiatus we are excited to be able to present our 4th WorldSongs Vocal
Camp with such gifted and talented musicians and leaders.
The number of participants is limited to 40, so
register early by emailing
worldsongs4@gmail.com
We will have plenty of time to learn many new songs: as usual an eclectic
assortment of music of various village singing traditions from around the world.
WorldSongs Vocal Camp is an intensive experience. Everyone is welcome, whatever
your musical background or training, but the camp is meant for those who really love
to sing and who feel that learning new songs, rehearsing and singing all day long is a
taste of paradise.
A typical day will include three rehearsal times (morning: 9:30-11:30, afternoon:
2:30-5:00 and evening: 7:30 -9:00), as well as opportunities for small group and
individual instruction.
Leading the singing will be Alan Gasser, Dr. Diane White-Clayton and Suba Sankaran.
After several hours of practice in a day, singers sometimes like to spend a free
evening singing together! There will be an opportunity for those who wish to perform
in an in-house cabaret or talent show towards the end of the retreat to strut their
stuff! We will also perform together in a public concert at the end of the camp.
There will be at least one afternoon of free time, so that you can rest and rejuvenate
at a local beach on Georgian Bay, hike through the woods at Sugar Ridge, canoe at
Wye Marsh Conservation Center or tour about and see some of the historic sights in
the area.
Sleeping accommodation is shared and singers will join in light cooking and cleaning
duties together. A few tenting spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Along with our love of world music, Canadians love to eat food from around the
world. Our meals will be simple, healthy, plentiful, fresh, eclectic and delicious.
Susan Reid, our fabulous cook from previous camps is back by popular demand.
Specific dietary needs will be taken into account in our planning, as much as
possible.
Eating meals together is very much a part of the shared community of the
WorldSongs experience. We have a food coordinator on staff to organize meals but
we all help in the prep, serving and cleanup. Expect your co-campers to burst into
spontaneous song while doing the dishes, setting the table and sharing in preparing
the daily meals.
Spaces will be allotted based on a first come, first served basis and a balance of voice
parts. Fees include all meals, accommodation and tuition for the 7 days.
The camp starts on the afternoon of Mon. July 18th and ends with an afternoon concert in
the Midland area on Sun. July 24th. Midland is 1.5 hours north of Toronto.

Dr. Diane White-Clayton
A native of Washington, DC, Diane was performing by age four and directing choirs
by age nine; she was arranging and composing by eleven. She holds a Ph.D. and MA in
Music Composition from the University of California at Santa Barbara and graduated
with honors from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri where she received a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. ...More
Affectionately known as "Dr. Dee", Diane travels extensively as a vocalist, pianist,
composer, conductor, workshop clinician, and speaker. She has held numerous positions
at universities, colleges and churches across the USA. As a composer, Dr. Dee is most
known for her choral anthems and has won much acclaim with her tremendous stylistic
diversity, ranging from atonal classical pieces to contemporary gospel. A classically
trained pianist, she weds her virtuosic, mellow, gospel style with her soprano voice,
stretching in a three-and-a-half octave range.
Diane is married to the love of her life, former recording and touring R&B percussionist,
Joe Louis Clayton of Los Angeles, who will also be joining us at WorldSongs this year as
well.
Alan Gasser
Alan is a singer, conductor and music teacher. He grew up in Ohio, singing in an
Anabaptist church where his father was a song leader. He has explored a broad range
of musical styles, including classical music and opera, gospel, vocal jazz, experimental
music and music from the Republic of Georgia. ...More
He has been a co-director of the Echo
Women's Choir since 1993. In 1994, he formed the Georgian folk trio Kavkasia with
whom he has recorded three CD’s.
Alan has taught at all levels from Toronto’s public schools to its universities and is
currently working for the Royal Conservatory. He is also the founder of Toronto's
Georgian folk chorus Darbazi. Alan has led workshops in London (UK), San Francisco,
for the Toronto District School Board, and for Village Harmony in Vermont, USA.
Suba Sankaran
From an early age, DORA award-winning, JUNO-nominated Suba Sankaran has effortlessly combined musical worlds. While studying European classical piano and voice, she also immersed herself in south Indian classical music with her father, master drummer Trichy Sankaran.
As a multi-musician (voice, piano, percussion), Suba regularly performs across North America, Europe and Asia with world music ensembles autorickshaw and Trichy’s Trio. She seamlessly crosses genres with artists such as Jane Bunnett and George Koller (jazz); Voyces Past and the Nathaniel Dett Chorale (classical/choral); David Mott and Maza Mezé (new music/world) and Retrocity and Hampton Avenue (contemporary a cappella). Highlights include performing for Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu, and Peter Gabriel.
Suba is in demand as a choral director, arranger, educator and composer. She has composed, recorded and produced music for theatre, film, radio and dance, including collaborations with Oscar-nominee Deepa Mehta.
